CHEMISTRY HISTORY--AUGUST 20

1] 1936--Hideki Shirakawa was born.-Japanese chemist--Awarded Noble Prize in 2000 for discovery of conductive polymers.
2] 1917--Adolf van Baeyer died.--German organic chemist.--Awarded Noble Prize in 1905 for his work on organic dyes and hydroaromatic compounds.
3] 1779--Jons Jecob Berzelius was born--Swedish chemist--1] Created table of known elements on the basis of atomic weights.
--2] First to use chemical notation system in use today with symbols for elements and numbers to denote proportions. Today, subscript is used to denote proportion
whereas he used superscript.
--3] Credited discovery of Si, Se, Th and Ce
--4] He coined the terms--Catalysis, Polymer, Isomer and Allotrope
